Question: How does it feel to be on country radio?
Stephen Wilson Jr.: “Oh, it’s an honor. I’ve been listening to country radio my whole life. So hearing a song that came from the way in which it did and hearing that story kind of live on country radio. Because country radio, to me, that really affected me were there were story songs. And those stories really grabbed me early on. So this song, Gary, is a story. It’s a story about a. A guy named Gary, or Minnie Gary, he’s metaphorically. And so to have any contribution to the fabric that is country radio and to be part of the soundtrack of lives, going to work, going home, it’s a real honor to be a part of the fabric of our society, because I feel like country music is the mini threads that hold us all together and and kind of unite us as well. And yeah, it’s something I’ve, I guess, you know, never really thought would happen. My dreams outdreamed me a long time ago. And some of my favorite artists, like John Mellencamp, he was on the radio all the time and he wrote these incredible story songs. But, you know I always thought if he could do it, maybe I could too.”

Question: How do you remember new lyrics? Like while driving down the road?
Stephen Wilson Jr.: “Yeah, I just, I can memorize it pretty well. It’s always been one of my little, I guess if I have any things that I’m inclined or better at doing than others, it’s memorizing things. And so yeah, I would just kind of say it over and over again in the lines. I try to stay out of the way of it. The lines kind of show up if I’m doing it right. And, but yeah, you do gotta remember them, so. That if there is any skill, there’s that. And then, yeah, I use voice memo, and I just will say the whole thing. Half the time, I’ll start singing it. I did start singing. So whatever key I sing it in in the car is the key I pick for the guitar that I probably start writing the music around. But it all starts with the lyrics first.”

Stephen Wilson Jr: “Exciting. It’s Gary exciting. Yeah I think Gary belongs on country radio or any radio for that matter and yeah so this will be my my my first song out to country radio and yeah I think gary is ready and I’m ready to celebrate his life.”
